HART-IP employs a defense in-depth security strategy that blends prevention, detection and deterrence. As a result, HART-IP is relatively simple to deploy and an effective tool that can enhance the plant's process automation security. This presentation begins with an overview of the HART-IP security triangle followed by a summary of securely deploying HART-IP devices. Since secure HART-IP operation is a tool, its place in the plant security lifecycle is also reviewed. Finally, as many HART 4-20mA developers are not IP or security experts, integration of security into the product development lifecycle is summarized. Secure HART-IP operation includes adopting the HART-IP security specifications, development of an overall secure device, and integration into plant operations and lifecycles.

Wally Pratt is Director HART Technology with the FieldComm Group. He has over 40 years of experience designing, developing, and supporting embedded real-time systems, digital signal processing, continuous and batching controls, process and environmental instrumentation, and digital communications protocols and systems. He was the technical lead for the development and introduction of C8PSK Physical Layer ("Multi-Speed HART"), WirelessHART, and HART-IP. He is the architect of the HART and WirelessHART Test Systems. Wally joined the HART Communication Foundation (now FieldComm Group) in 1994. Prior to that, he worked for several small control and instrumentation companies in the Austin Texas area.

The growing threat of cybersecurity incidents and attacks around the world have driven the global community to deploy various controls, standards and best practices to raise their own critical infrastructures readiness and defense capabilities.
